Falkland Islands Rife Association
On 1st December the club welcomed 6
students from the Community School. Mr Dent had arranged an afternoon at the
range to see how the club works and Gerald had arranged a shoot at 300 yards.
After a short talk about safety and how the scores and targets work and how to
hold the rifle, each student had 2 goes at shooting. Although it was a very
windy afternoon all seemed to enjoy the experience and the club hopes to see
them back in the future.
On Sunday the 4th we should have shot for
the Stanley Arms Cup but bad weather meant this had to be postponed until
Sunday 11th. The traditional 8th December Stanly Cup
shoot, also had to be postponed due to bad weather and it was agreed this will
now take place on Tuesday 10th January starting at 5pm.
On Sunday 11th December we final got the
first good weather of the season and 11 members took part in the Stanley Arms
Cup, first stage of the 600 yard Championship and Christmas Lamb shoot.
We welcomed 2 new junior members, Jason Stephenson
and Marcus Pole-Evans. At 300 yards Derek and Mike had top score with 48 out of
50. Gareth was next best on 47. Roy Goss, who has only been shooting for a
short time, shot well here and scored 42, however one of our top shots, Chris
had a very poor shoot and only managed 32.
At 500 yards Ken and Christian had top score with 48
with Derek next best on 47. Jason and Marcus shot well here and managed 27 and
26. At 600 yards Chris made up for his poor start to the day by scoring 48,
with Derek next best on 47 and Gareth and Christian next best on 46.
After all the scores had been added Derek came out on
top with 142 out of 150. Second was Gareth on 139 and third Mike on 138.
The quarters of lamb were won by Mike at 300, Ken at
500, Chris at 600 and Derek with overall score.
Chris, Derek and Christian qualified to shoot in the
final of the 600 yard Championship along with last year’s winner Gareth. This
will take place later in the season.

On Tuesday evening 14 members took part in the
December spoon and Christmas hamper shoot. This was a 7 round, handicap
competition, over 300, 500 and 600 yards. It was pleasing to see Jason and
Marcus back again along with another new competitor Mark Dodd. We also welcomed
back Liam and Toni Stevens, John Felton and Timmy McCallum.
Conditions were good and this was reflected in the
scores. At 300 yards Gareth and Christian had top score with 34 out of 35.
Christian put his better scores of late, down to his new shooting jacket but I
think his experience at Bisley this year has also helped. At 500 yards Timmy
had top score with 34 and just 1 point back were Gareth and Derek Goodwin and
Chris. At 600 yards Chris top scored with 34, with Toni and Christian next best
on 33. All our new, junior members shot very well on the day and it was
pleasing to see that after handicaps had been added Jason’s final score was
only 1.5 behind Chris. In fact there was only 2.7 point separating Jason, Mark
and Marcus. Marcus also managed to beat his grandfather once his handicap had
been added.
After all handicaps had been added to the final
scores, the December spoons were won by Derek Goodwin and Toni Stevens.
